China Hosts 'Atoms for a Better Home and Global South' Side Event at UN Headquarters in Vienna

On November 26, the Permanent Mission of China in Vienna, along with the China Atomic Energy Authority and China National Nuclear Corporation, jointly hosted a side event titled "Atoms for a Better Home and Global South" at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna. This is also an important event of the "Group of Friends of Global Development Initiative" organized by China in Vienna this year.

Ambassador Li Song, Permanent Representative of China in Vienna, Rafael Grossi, Director General of IAEA, Qu Dongyu, Director General of FAO, Zou Ciyong, Deputy Director General of UNIDO, and other representatives attended the event. Nearly 300 participants, including representatives from international organizations in Vienna, officials from Member States, experts, and media representatives, attended the event too.

Ambassador Li Song actively promoted President Xi Jinping's important speech on global common development and China's eight actions for global development. He emphasized that China is actively promoting international development cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear technology at multilateral platforms in Vienna. He expressed confidence that, through joint efforts between China and relevant international organizations, more and better success stories and development experiences will be shared with countries in the Global South.

Director General Grossi and Director General Qu introduced the efforts made by the IAEA and FAO to address global challenges such as food security. Grossi said the initiatives, such as GDI, are very important because what we need to do is to have these interlocking initiatives and ideas, which are pointing in the same direction to bring hope to the word.

During the event, Chinese experts presented the latest achievements in the application of nuclear technology in fields such as healthcare and agriculture. Participants expressed enthusiasm for strengthening communication and cooperation with China to jointly promote the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
