Remarks by Ambassador Li Song at the Side Event Accelerators for a Healthier Future

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon.

On behalf of the Permanent Mission of China to Vienna, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you to this side event hosted by China delegation. We gather here to discuss "Accelerators for a Healthier Future"—a critical issue of our time that bears directly upon the future of humanity.

As we all know, accelerators, the cutting-edge technology, are not only "major scientific facilities" designed to explore the origin of the universe and the fundamental nature of matter, standing as the crown jewel of fundamental physics, but also are increasingly making their way into brightly lit hospitals and directly to patients' bedsides. From precision tumor radiation therapy to medical isotope production, and from advanced diagnostic imaging to novel drug discovery, accelerator technology has become an indispensable cornerstone of modern medicine. It serves as a compelling testament to how humanity can translate frontier science into life-saving well-being.

As an active contributor to global scientific innovation, China has been vigorously promoting the R&D and application of these technologies to benefit the public. We have achieved a series of breakthroughs these years in fields such as Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), the mass production of alpha-emitting isotopes, and medical isotope production, building a comprehensive industrial chain that spans from basic equipment to clinical application, and from treatment techniques to core raw materials.

China actively puts into practice the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind proposed by President Xi Jinping, while pushing forward our own development. Adhering to the principles of "open cooperation, mutual benefit, and shared prosperity," we encourage our research teams to join forces with global peers to tackle key challenges and share the dividends of accelerator technology. We support domestic medical accelerators and therapeutic devices in going global, thereby offering more cost-effective options for countries in need, helping more nations achieve a localized supply of medical isotopes. In the same spirit of multilateralism, China strongly supports the "Rays of Hope" initiative launched by Director General Grossi. Through the Atomic Energy Scholarship Program of China, professional training courses for medical radiation physicists, etc., we consistently help developing countries cultivate their own nuclear technology talent. We have also facilitated the designation of IAEA Collaborating Centres for radio-pharmaceuticals and radiation sources, as well as "Rays of Hope" Anchor Centre in China. Leveraging these platforms, we look forward to deepening capacity-building cooperation and joint scientific research, injecting strong momentum into the global nuclear medicine industry, including accelerator technology, and making nuclear medical services far more accessible and affordable.

As vividly demonstrated by the Second International Conference on Accelerator Research and Innovations this week, cross-border collaborative innovation is moving forward at an unprecedented pace. Standing at this new starting point, China is ready to continue working together with the IAEA and all Member States to jointly advance R&D innovation, popularization, and international cooperation of accelerators in the health sector. Together, we can better serve our shared socio-economic development goals and build a brighter, healthier future for all!
