Madam Chair,
For some time now, due to the serious lack of mutual trust, DPRK and US have not been able to find proper solutions to address their respective concerns, and the peace talks have been in a deadlock. But the overall situation on the Korean peninsula has been stable and the tension has been easing.
At present, the situation on the Korean peninsula is at a critical juncture. We note that US announced the completion of its DPRK policy review and emphasized its objective of achieving complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. The US also stated it would address this issue through peaceful diplomatic means and seek to resume dialogue with DPRK on the basis of agreements reached at the Singapore summit and the Pyongyang Joint Declarationof September 19th. The 8th Congress of the Worker's Party of Korea held at the beginning of this year decided to stick to the policy of reciprocity towards US, 'power for power and goodwill for goodwill', which maintains the possibility of dialogue and negotiation. All relevant parties should do more that are conducive to peace and stability on the peninsula. They should respect each other's legitimate concerns, refrain from provocation, and strive to maintain the hard-won de-escalation so as to resume dialogue and negotiation as early as possible and continue to advance the political settlement process of the Korean Peninsula issue.
Madam Chair,
Maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula, achieving denuclearization, and building a peace mechanism of the Peninsula serve the shared interests of all parties. The international community should support the overall direction of dialogue and consultation to settle the issue on the peninsula. China is supportive of positive interactions between DPRK and US, improved relationship between DPRK and South Korea as well as any efforts that help advance dialogue, ease tensions and promote cooperation. We stand ready to work alongside the international community based on the dual-track approach and the phased and synchronized principle, and play an active role to move forward the political settlement process on the peninsula.
