On November 28, in the margins of the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications and the Technical Cooperation Programme organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the "Group of Friends on Food Security in Vienna" hosted a side event titled "Nuclear Techniques in Addressing Food Security Challenges: Successful Stories from the Global South". More than 100 representatives from various countries attended the event. Ambassador Li Song, Permanent Representative of China in Vienna attended and delivered a speech.
Ambassador Li emphasized that China attaches great importance to food security and actively contributes to international cooperation through both bilateral and multilateral channels. On one hand, China leverages its resources and expertise in nuclear science and technology to conduct extensive bilateral exchanges and cooperation with countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, helping them address food security issues. On the other hand, China actively joins the Vienna’s multilateral platform to advocate the “Atoms for the Global South”.
This concept aligns with the “Atoms4Food” initiative jointly launched by the IAEA and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Ambassador Li highlighted that this approach helps to further mobilize stakeholders, promote North-South and South-South cooperation, and encourage multilateral organizations and Member States in Vienna to work together to harness nuclear technology for the benefit of the Global South, fostering more success stories.
