Mr. Chair,
China support the resolution on Application of IAEA Safeguards in the Middle East proposed by Egypt. The Middle East, like any other regions in the world, should not be subjected to the threat of nuclear weapons. The establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East is conducive to curbing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, preserving the authority and effectiveness of the international non-proliferation regime, and providing an important mechanism that will ensure lasting peace and security in the region.
China calls on relevant regional countries and nuclear-weapon states to earnestly shoulder their due responsibilities and participate in the process of establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction within the UN framework. China is willing to work with the international community to contribute to the early realization of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction and to achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
Last week, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution supporting the two-State solution between Israel and Palestine. The Gaza conflict has dragged on for nearly two years, causing a grave humanitarian disaster. The question of Palestine bears on the peace, stability, and long-term security of the region. The implementation of the two-State solution is the only viable way to resolve the question. The imperative now is to immediately realize a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and alleviate the humanitarian disaster. China welcomes the IAEA Board of Governors' implementation of the IAEA General Conference resolution, by allowing Palestine to exercise its legitimate rights and participate in the work of the Board. China actively participates in the "Group Friends of Palestine" activities in Vienna and highly commends the positive communication between the IAEA Secretariat and the "Group Friends" regarding technical assistance to Palestine. We hope these efforts will soon benefit the Palestinian people.
Thank you, Mr. Chair.
