Ambassador Li Song's Statement at the Extraordinary Session of the IAEA Board of Governors on the Matter related to the Israeli Attacks against the Iranian Nuclear Facilities that are under the safeguards

2025-06-17 15:10

Israel’s military operations against Iran causing damage to Iran's nuclear facilities and casualties, undermined the political and diplomatic process around Iranian nuclear issue, weakened efforts to uphold the international non-proliferation regime, and have serious negative impact on regional peace, security and stability. China condemns Israel’s military actions against Iran and opposes any armed attack on peaceful nuclear facilities, opposes violations of Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, as well as any the intensification of tensions and the expansion of conflicts

Escalation of the situation in the Middle East again serves no one’s interest, and innocent civilians are not in a position to suffer yet another humanitarian catastrophe. China is seriously concerned about the negative impact of the latest developments on the prospects of diplomatic negotiations. China’s foreign minister Mr Wang Yi held phone calls with his counterparts from Iran and Israel, urging all parties to act with prudence, and avoid any action that may lead to a spiral of tensions. The international community should make joint efforts towards de-escalating tensions so as to effectively contain the spread of conflict.

Whatever turns the situation may take, China consistently advocates that political and diplomatic means to peacefully settle the Iranian issue is the only correct path. We oppose the use of force and illegal unilateral sanctions. Iran’s commitments not to seek to develop a nuclear weapon and to cooperate with the IAEA should be taken seriously. The inalienable right of States Parties to the NPT to peaceful uses of nuclear energy should be fully respected, and the safety and security of nuclear facilities under the Agency’s safeguards should be fully ensured.

China supports the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. China will continue to act with objectivity and impartiality to uphold the international non-proliferation regime, and to promote peace and stability in the Middle East. We’ll actively advocate for peace and promote negotiations to advance the political and diplomatic process to solve the Iranian nuclear issue, and help achieve a solution that address the legitimate concerns of all parties. We support the Agency’s efforts to implement its mandate with objectivity and impartiality and its constructive role in this regard.
